Dr Birtle combines professional skills with real human warmth. I saw for myself how she goes out of her way to accommodate the needs of her patients when, from a PURELY professional point of view, she might well have prioritised her clinical schedules. Her explanations to me were as clear as they could be and she showed she knows not just how but what to explain, sensing the areas in which I was concerned or lacking in useful information. To date, Dr Birtle's care has been caring, her expertise has been expert and I could not have asked for a better Consultant Oncologist.

Being diagnosed with prostate cancer was initially a shock,frightening-almost overwhelming.Dr Birtle took the trouble to question a previous diagnosis and to subsequently overturn the original decision resulting in a different approach to my treatment, this gave me so much confidence and allowed me to be positive. Her approach is no nonsense, clear and concise leaving you in no doubt that her chosen course of treatment is the best option for you,yet she delivers with warmth and an infectious laugh. Alison is a rare individual at the top of her profession with an inquisitive mind not afraid of challenging the norm in her specialism with the ability to make you feel she is focused on you.She is a person who manages to make it easy to discuss your cancer. The NHS should consider itself lucky to have such a dedicated doctor as Alison.

Alison is a consummate professional and her experience is a matter of record. However whilst being world class she operates at the individual patient level. No pomposity, no gobblydygook, just facts and straight talking but with a heart of gold. I have advanced prostate cancer but literally from our first meeting, Alison has given me such confidence that I can operate without the emotional burden that cancer brings to one. This is liberation. I am fascinated by her depth of knowledge and options available in this domain but for once I do not need to investigate, research, check, triangulate, overthink the whole matter. She tells me what to do . . . . and I do it. Now for me, that is confidence. Alison, I cannot thank you enough
